BJA Magnetics offers both compression bonded 1:5, and 2:17 SmCo magnets. Compression Bonded SmCo magnets are manufactured using a special form of SmCo powder blended with a plastic carrier material, die pressed, and then heated.
Various shapes of high dimensional accuracy can be produced, requiring no further finish machining. Due to excellent corrosion resistance, coating is not required. They have lower energy products than sintered SmCo – currently in the range of 4.0 to 10.0 MGOe. Because they are isotropic, this magnet is ideal for multi-pole magnetizing patterns.
Compression bonding is most appropriate for relatively simple geometries due to limitations of the compaction process. The tooling cost for compression bonding is comparatively low, making it a better choice than injection molding where volumes are small. However, with modest automation, compression bonding can also be adopted for high volume manufacturing, with volumes up to millions of pieces per year.
